Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) is a combat art / sport that focuses on using leverage and technique to submit your opponent and on the ground. Its one of the fundamental styles that constitutes modern mixed martial arts. Our brand of Brazilian jiu-jitsu descends from Rigan Machado, one of the greatest Brazilian jiu-jitsu competitors of all time.

Classes are typically taught by a black belt instructor or in some cases another upper rank (brown or purple belt). Besides the instructors who are based here, we frequently have opportunities to learn from from other black belts in the Team Machado Utah clan, some of whom are world-level competitors. Classes typically consist of a period of instruction followed by a period of drilling, training or free sparring.

Our club focuses primarily on competitive Brazilian jiu-jitsu, although we do study and incorporate street-worthy technique into our training. We work hard and push each other to improve, and we’re very supportive and welcoming to new students. Whether you’re a seasoned veteran or a first-timer, our BJJ classes have something to offer you.

Learning Jiu-Jitsu at Roots Combat Club will benefit you and your child immensely.
BJJ helps:

  • build mental toughness
  • teaches the value of hard work
  • and gives you the persistence you need in everyday life

Many members at Roots Combat Club have said that BJJ is also a great stress-relief from school or work because it helps take their mind off problems they are facing so they can focus all their strength and thoughts into grappling on the mats.
